Jesus found Matthew right where he was. At work doing his job. Every day we come across people that need to know the love of Jesus. It matters deeply to God that we reach out to people no matter what their situation is. Whether they are an upstanding “moral” person or whether they are a drug-addicted thief. Jesus had a heart for people who knew they were not living a righteous life. He spent more time with them than he did with people who “claimed” to be righteous. The Pharisees observed their religion but had no compassion for those who needed spiritual help. Are we guilty of that?

Jesus taught under his own authority because he was God’s son. We need to recognize that authority and be obedient to his instructions on loving “Everybody Always.” It is easy to love those people who are like you, who agree with you, who have the same beliefs. But God instructs us to love “Everybody Always.” Including those that disagree with us and may even oppose us. God has mercy on everyone, even those that don’t follow him. That mercy is given to them in hopes that they might repent.

The rich young ruler filled his life with wealth and became so attached to it that it stood in the way of him following Jesus. You will become whatever you fill your “bucket” with. If you fill it with love, you will become love. If you fill it with things that only serve you, you will not be on your way to loving “Everybody Always.” This man wanted more faith.
