Acts 25-26

June 26, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 25—26

Setting the Context After Paul finished his third missionary journey, he returned to Jerusalem to deliver an offering for the Jerusalem church. Soon after Paul arrived, he was attacked verbally and physically by the Jews. When Paul explained to the authorities that he was a Roman citizen, he was taken into protective custody and transported to Caesarea—the administrative headquarters of Judea. The Governor of Judea, a man named Felix, who was described by Tacitus, a Roman historian, as cruel, shameless, and immoral. As a result of Felix’s poor leadership, the emperor Nero fired him in 60 A.D. and replaced him with a new Governor named Festus. Passage Summary Festus puts Paul through two trials, one with the Jews and one before King Agrippa. In Paul’s defense before Agrippa, we learn five important steps for sharing the message of Jesus. 1. Always demonstrate respect and gentleness (Acts 25:2-3; see also 2 Timothy 2:24-26 and 1 Peter 3:15). 2. Find common ground (Acts 26:6-8). Here are five questions all people ask: • Where did you come from? (Origin) • Who am I? (Identity) • Why am I here? (Meaning) • How should I live? (Morality) • Where am I going? (Destiny) From I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, Geisler and Turek 3. Share what your life was like before Jesus (Acts 25:9-11). 4. Tell the story of how Jesus transformed your life (Acts 26:12-23). What is spiritual transformation? (Acts 26:18) • We are transformed from darkness to light. • We are transitioned from the power of Satan to the power of God. • We are forgiven (Declared “Not Guilty!”) • We are set apart to serve God. How is transformation accomplished? (Acts 26:18, 20, 22) • Through faith alone in Christ alone by grace alone • By repentance and turning to God • All about Jesus What is the outcome of transformation? (Acts 26:20) • An empowered life 5. Invitation to believe and leave it to God (Acts 26:28-29) DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH RON MOORE Get Ron’s Daily Devotional to your inbox each morning; visit biblechapel.org/devo. Acts 24:1-27

June 19, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 24

Acts 24:1-27: Summary After his trial in Jerusalem, a conspiracy to kill Paul was uncovered. He was escorted to Caesarea, the administrative headquarters of Judea, by almost 500 soldiers. Five days after he arrived, Paul was tried before Felix, the Roman governor. Felix postponed a decision about Paul’s guilt or innocence and kept him as a prisoner. Felix spoke to Paul often about faith in Christ Jesus. Acts 27:1-27: Flow • The High Priest, Ananias, Jewish leaders, and a lawyer familiar with the Roman legal process came down from Jerusalem to testify against Paul (Acts 24:1-9). • Paul defended himself admirably before his accusers and the governor, Felix (Acts 24:10-21). - Paul defended himself again the charges (Acts 24:10-13). - Paul argued that Jesus fulfilled all of the Old Testament (Acts 24:14-21). • Felix, who had a “rather accurate knowledge of the Way,” put off a decision and put Paul in prison (albeit with leniency) (Acts 24:22-23). • Felix and Drusilla met with Paul to hear more about Jesus. While there seemed to be conviction, they made no decision to follow Jesus (Acts 24:24-25). • Felix met with Paul often in hopes of receiving a bribe (Acts 24:26). • After two years, Felix was replaced by Festus. Normally, prisoners were set free in the transition. However, Felix, trying to please the Jews, left Paul in prison (Acts 24:27). Application: 1. Felix lived with regrets but did not move from them. We can allow Jesus to redeem our regrets and help us use the time he gives us for eternal pursuits. 2. It is foolish to put off Jesus until a more opportune time, as Felix did. The time for commitment or recommitment is today. 3. Summer Family Devotional: Road Rules - biblechapel.org/devo. Acts 21-22

June 5, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 21—22

Grace is God’s free sovereign favor to the undeserving. Acts 21-22 tell the story of Paul’s trip back to Jerusalem to end his third missionary journey. While in Jerusalem, Paul was confronted and ultimately beaten by those who did not understand God’s grace. Paul was saved from death by Roman officials and at the end of Acts 22 is in their custody. It was hard for the early Jewish Christians to grasp grace. And the same goes for many believers today. GRASPING GRACE • MAN’S MORAL BANKRUPTCY Romans 3:9-12 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:23-24 …For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…. • GOD’S JUSTICE Nahum 1:3a The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death…. • MAN’S HELPLESSNESS Romans 3:20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. • GOD’S SOVEREIGN FREEDOM Acts 17:24-25 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. Romans 3:23-24 …For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Acts 20:28-38

Review: Acts 20:18-27 The Characteristics of an Influencer (Part 1) • Transparency • Humility • Passion • Perseverance • Gospel-Centric Acts 20:28-36 The Characteristics of an Influencer (Part 2) • Guard your heart. Beware of external dangers. False teachers try to answer these foundational questions: - Where did you come from? (Origin) - Who am I? (Identity) - Why am I here? (Meaning) - How should I live? (Morality) - Where am I going? (Destiny) - I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, Geisler and Turek False teachers try to answer these questions from a faulty worldview. Naturalism: There is no God. Humans evolved from animals. The universe is a closed physical system. Postmodernism: There are no objective truths or moral standards. Right and wrong is determined by society. Pluralism: The different world religions provide equally valid paths to salvation. Moralistic Therapeutic Deism: God just wants us to be happy and nice to other people. He only intervenes when we call on him to help us out. New Spirituality: All people pray to the same god or spirit no matter what name they use for the spiritual being. If you do good you will receive good. If you do bad you will receive bad. Beware of internal dangers. • Lapse in Spiritual Focus • Ignoring God’s Word • Chasing Stuff DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH RON MOORE Get Ron’s Daily Devotional to your inbox each morning; visit biblechapel.org/devo.
