Acts: The Way to Growth

Acts 16:16-40

March 27, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 16:16–40

Overview The church started growing from 120 to over 10,000 people, and the religious leaders said something must be done. Stephen was stoned to death, and a Pharisee with passion and drive started persecuting the church until Jesus interrupted his life and transformed his heart, and used his inner drive to build the church (Saul’s conversion). Paul has completed one missionary tour with Barnabas. Now he is on his second missionary tour with Silas, Timothy, and Luke. The team is now in Europe—Greece—Philippi. And a very influential businesswoman named Lydia has trusted in Jesus, and the church is meeting in her home. Acts 16:16 The “spirit of divination” translates into two Greek words—“a spirit, a python.” Acts 16:17 What she says is true—but remember it is coming from the demon inside her. The words are not meant to promote Jesus but distract people from the message. Acts 16:18-24 After Paul and Silas are beaten, they are thrown into prison. The jailer threw them in the inner prison—probably a dungeon. And to make sure they could not escape, he put their feet in stocks. Acts 16:25 Paul and Silas hold a worship service, and as they are praying and singing hymns … Acts 16:26 “…and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened.” Acts 16:27-28 Roman law said that if a guard lost a prisoner, he was given the same punishment the prisoner would have received. Acts 16:28-30 The jailer asks, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30) Acts 16:31-34 Only Jesus. By Grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Faith in Jesus Christ alone is the emphasis throughout the book of Acts. [Acts 2:38–39; 4:12; 8:12, 37; 10:10–43; 13:38–39] Acts 16:35-36 The officials knew they had no convincing case against Paul and Silas. They wanted to teach them a lesson and get them out of town. Paul—has a trump card—a Roman citizenship card. You don’t beat and imprison a Roman citizen without a fair trial. Acts 16:37-39 Paul didn’t want to leave this new church in Phillipi under a cloud of suspicion. Had they left quietly, the perception would have been that they must have been guilty of some crime. Paul wanted to leave a strong witness of integrity. Acts 16:25 Not easy to pray and sing songs of praise when you are in pain in the midnight times, in the dark times. Any fool can sing in the day. It is easy to sing when we can read the notes by daylight; but the skillful singer is he who can sing when there is not a ray of light to read by. Songs in the night come only from God; they are not in the power of men. -C. H. Spurgeon When you sing songs in the night, other people take notice. Songs in the night are a vivid demonstration that following Jesus really works. Songs in the night come only from God. Songs in the night come only from what Jesus has done. Acts 15:36-16:24

March 20, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 15:36—16:24

Overview It is 50 AD, and in Acts 15—God is getting ready to take the message of Jesus into Europe. Let’s consider that story and then focus on some leadership lessons.        We saw last time that the leaders of the church get together in Jerusalem (Jerusalem Council – 49 AD) and confirm once and for all that becoming a Christian is: Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Acts 15:36 Paul and Barnabus want to see how the churches are doing. Acts 15:37-38 Acts 15:39a The word “sharp disagreement” means “severe argument based on [an] intense difference of opinion.” Acts 16:1-3 Acts 16:4-7 Acts 16:9-10 Paul’s vision was to retrace the steps of the first missionary journey and read to them the Jerusalem Council report about no circumcision for salvation. But God had a bigger vision—he always does. Paul’s plan was for discipleship in Asia. God’s plan was for evangelizing Europe. God often shuts doors in our lives to open bigger ones. Acts 16:13-14 God is the one who initiates salvation. He opened her heart to believe. John 6:44-45 Acts 16:15 What does it take to be an influencer of people? What’s it take to lead well—in your homes, in your vocations, in our church? DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH RON MOORE Get Ron’s Daily Devotional to your inbox each morning; visit http://biblechapel.org/devo. Acts 15:1-35

March 13, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 15:1–35

Overview Acts 15:5 Two things going on: Salvation and living in community together. The leaders of the early church debated these issues at length. There were strong opinions and strong emotions. Acts 15:8-11 The New Covenant is radically different. 1. grace-based, not performance-based (gift not merit) 2. Messiah-focused, not temple-focused (Jesus is the new Temple) 3. worldwide in scope, not focused on the Jewish race Acts 15:19-21 James addresses two issues: 1. How can we have a loving and unified community with Christian Jews and non-Jews together? 2. How can we continue to share the message of Jesus with Jews? Here’s how. 1. Idolatry. Abstain from the things polluted by idols. 2. Immorality. You are a new creation—don’t give into sin championed by the culture. 3. Community. Acts 15:31-35 The Church Today: 1. A strong godly future demands strong goldy leadership today. 2. Salvation is by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in Christ Alone. 3. Live like you love Jesus. Acts 11:1-30

February 13, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 11

JESUS IS ALIVE! AND DOING HIS WORK ON EARTH FROM HEAVEN THROUGH US!                Acts 10:45 While this is normal to us, non-Jews becoming followers of Jesus was a contentious and dividing issue for many years. Acts 11:2-3 Why was this such a big deal? Acts 11:4-18 Acts 11:19-20 So some of those who had been scattered shared the message of Jesus only with the Jews, and others shared with the Hellenists—or Greek-speaking non-Jews. Acts 11:21 “turned to the Lord”—great description of repentance. Who is this guy named Barnabas? Here are some basic observations about Barnabas. His encouragement was contagious. When the apostles saw him and his focus on building people up, supporting them, and giving others confidence and hope, they said—I know your name is Joseph—but we have a new name for you—Son of Encouragement Barnabas.  He was generous. Early on, he sold a field and gave the money to the apostles. His encouragement went beyond words. He was encouraged by generous action. He was ready and available for ministry. The apostles hear that people are coming to Jesus in Antioch—this cesspool of immorality. Jews were coming to Jesus, and non-Jews were coming to Jesus. That’s going to be putting a match to gasoline. Who is the best person to handle that potentially volatile situation? Let’s send Barnabas. He was the man for the job. People were coming to Christ in Antioch. And when Barnabas got there, more people came to Christ. So he needed some help. Whom do you think he went to find? Acts 9:32-10:48

February 6, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 9:32—10:48

THROUGH THE BOOK OF ACTS, THERE ARE SEVEN PROGRESS REPORTS. SO FAR, WE HAVE SEEN THE FOLLOWING: Progress Report #1 Acts 2:46-47: And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Progress Report #2 Acts 6:7: And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith Progress Report #3 Acts 9:31: The church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. Acts 9:34-35 Peter used this sign to share the message of Jesus, and they believed the Good News and “turned to the Lord”—turning from sin (repentance) and turning to (faith) in the Lord. Acts 9:40-42 This great miracle was a sign—it authenticated the message and messenger, and many believed in Jesus. Acts 10.3-8 The next day while these three men were on their way from Caesarea to Joppa, Peter, who is in Joppa at Simon the tanner’s house, went up to the rooftop to pray—Looking out over the Mediterranean. Acts 10:14 That happened three times. And Peter said—what in the world was that. He was “inwardly perplexed” as to what the vision might mean. The theological importance of chapter 10 is that Jesus came for everyone from every nation, from every race, from every economic status, from every background. There is no one left out. No one left behind. The Gospel is all-inclusive. It is open to everyone. And open for all of us to be prepared to share that message. Acts 9:1-31

January 30, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 9:1–31

Acts 8:3 3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. Acts 9:1-2 The Conversion of Saul 9 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Acts 9:3 In Acts 22:6—he said it was around noon when this great light came from heaven. In Acts 26:13—he said the light was brighter than the sun causing him to fall to the ground. Acts 9:4-5 4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 5 And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Remember—Jesus is alive and working from heaven. Here he makes himself visible to Saul. I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Acts 9:10-19 What can we learn from this? What are the theological take-aways and the practical application? EVERY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY BEGINS WITH THE CALL OF GOD. GOD’S CALLING PUTS US ON A DIFFERENT COURSE. EVERY BELIEVER IS A CHOSEN INSTRUMENT FOR THE GOOD NEWS. Acts 9:15 Saul became God’s chosen instrument to take the Good News to the non-Jewish—Gentile world. That was Saul’s calling. What’s yours? Acts 8:26-40

January 23, 2022 • Ron Moore • Acts 8:26–40

In Acts 8, the first persecution broke out against the church, and many believers were driven from Jerusalem. Acts 8:4 Philip went down to Samaria and told people about Jesus. Peter and John heard about the great response and went to Samaria to confirm the message. Acts 8:25 Philip stayed in Samaria. Great things were happening. People were coming to Jesus. Acts 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. Acts 8:27 Ethiopia is not modern-day Ethiopia but a region in southern Egypt down into Sudan, the ancient kingdom of Meroe, the Old Testament Kingdom of Cush. Acts 8:29-35 Philip runs into the Eunuch in the chariot, reading aloud Isaiah 53:7-8. And Philip—the guy who loves to talk about Jesus—asks—Do you understand what you are reading? Philip is not going to miss this golden opportunity. All Scripture is Christological. It all points to Jesus. In Acts 8, we have the stories of three men—Philip, Ethiopian, Simon (from last time). Each of these men was in different stages of their spiritual journey. So let’s review these guys. Which one most represents you in your spiritual journey? In Acts 8:9-24, we considered Simon the Sorcerer or Simon, the Magician—who was well known in Samaria and well respected. Would you agree, whether Simon is a believer or isn’t—Simon leaves us confused about his spiritual state. SIMON—CONFUSING ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH—SEEKER We have no spiritual background on this guy. Somewhere at some time, someone told him about Yahweh. God opened his heart. That’s the only way a person starts searching—God opens their heart. PHILIP—ON FIRE In Acts 6:3, Philip was one of the seven chosen. A true servant. Full of the Spirit and wisdom. No one was confused about where he stood with Jesus. Acts 6-7, Part 1: The Way to Growth

November 21, 2021 • Ron Moore • Acts 6—7

The Acts of the Apostles: The Continuing Acts of Jesus Christ Through the Apostles Acts is focused on the central truth of our faith – Jesus is alive. We see in Acts 6, there is a serious issue in the church—a cause for potential division. Satan wants nothing more than a divided church. The only thing worse than an empty church is a divided church. How do we handle conflict in Christian community: • Deal with issues. • Focus on the primary mission without the distraction of secondary things. Acts 4:32-5:11: The Way to Growth

November 7, 2021 • Dave DiDonato • Acts 4:32—5:11

1. Do I take Satan seriously? 2. Do I take my sin seriously? 3. Do I take the need for daily repentance seriously? 4. Do I ever practice the sin of spiritual deceit? 5. Do I ever attempt to make others think I’m more spiritual than I really am? 6. Am I living daily in reverent fear of my holy God? MORE THAN WORDS - PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE More Than Words: Praying Through The Bible - formerly called Bible 2020 - is an interactive group that follows along with daily devotionals from Ron Moore focused on the prayers of the Bible.
