Patient Suffering
November 17, 2024 • Ron Moore • James 5:7–12, 2 Corinthians 4:17—5:1, 2 Chronicles 24:20–22
THREE EXAMPLES OF PATIENCE
To illustrate what patience looks like, James provides three examples.
The Farmer: Trust God to do his work (James 5:7)
The farmer planted his crops right after the early rain in October and then waited for the seed to take root and sprout. He depended on God for the sunshine and moisture. The late rains in March/April provided what was needed to produce a bountiful crop. The farmer had to wait patiently for God to do his work.
The Prophets: Trust God to keep his Word (James 5:10)
One of the toughest jobs in the OT was to be a prophet. Often, they delivered a message that few wanted to hear and fewer wanted to believe. Moses had to endure the complaining and grumbling of people for 40 years. Jeremiah was called the weeping prophet. Along with his lengthy prophecy, he wrote the Book of laments (Lamentations). He was ridiculed, rejected, and thrown into the mud of an empty cistern with no food or water. Daniel was thrown into a den of hungry lions. Zechariah was put to death in the temple (2 Chron. 24:20-22).
Job: Trust God even when you don’t understand (James 5:11)
Job was a righteous man who lost everything—except his wife—but she told him to curse God and die. His friends were certain that Job had committed a sin. And although he suffered, God never explained why. Still, Job remained steadfast in his trust (Job 13:15).

Misery of Materialism
November 10, 2024 • Ron Moore • James 5:1–6, Psalm 62:10, Ephesians 5:10, 1 Timothy 6:10, Matthew 6:21
Throughout Scripture, God warns us about the seductive power of money. Jesus likens it to a completing god and says our treasure becomes the focus of our heart (Matt. 6:21-24). Paul instructs Timothy, the young pastor in Ephesus, to warn people about the love of money and how the desire for more wealth has left people spiritually shattered (1 Tim. 6:10, 17).
In today’s passage, James describes the wealthy who live apart from God. Their demise is a grim encouragement to the poor Jewish believers being taken advantage of. And the demise of the godless rich serves as a stark warning to those who follow Jesus.
1. Is wealth a competing god?
2. Is your wealth causing you to be spiritually soft?
3. Have you ever had a serious conversation with God about your wealth? Why did he bless you with it? What does he want you to do with it?

“If the Lord wills” is a bold statement of Christ-like humility.

Genuine Faith
October 6, 2024 • Ron Moore • James 2:14–26, Psalm 119:103–105, Hebrews 10:24–25, Philippians 1:6, John 3:16
How can we know for certain that we have saving faith?
1. Do I have a present trust in Christ for salvation?
“Believes” is in the present tense denoting continual action. Are you continuing to trust Jesus?
2. Is there evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in your heart?
· Presence of the Spirit (Rom. 8:13-16)
· Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:13-23)
3. Do you read the Bible and pray regularly?
God’s Word is his love letter to you. A true believer desires to hear from him. I am not saying you should doubt your salvation if you have missed a few days. But if you never pick up the Bible? There needs to be a desire to hear from God.
4. Is there a pattern of obedience in your life?
5. Are you involved in Christian fellowship?

No Room For Partiality
September 29, 2024 • Ron Moore • James 2:1–13, Luke 4:18–19, 1 Corinthians 1:26–29, 1 Samuel 16:6–7
Showing partiality based on outward appearance will always be a temptation for believers. In the Old Testament, the prophet Samuel was a godly and courageous man willing to speak the Word of God in the most unpopular and sometimes dangerous circumstances. But Israel rejected the old prophet and desired to have a king like the other nations. The first king they chose was impressive in appearance—a big man with a shriveled heart. Finally, God rejected him.
God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to find a man named Jesse. One of Jesse’s sons would be the next king. Jesse brought his sons before Samuel.
1 Samuel 16:6-7
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’S anointed is before him.” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
We are impressed by outward appearance. God is impressed with our hearts.

Believers are called to “grow through”, not “get through” trials.

To grow through trials, we must confidently seek the wisdom of God through His Word and prayer.

Lessons from the Life of James
Living in close proximity to Jesus does not guarantee you’re actually a follower of Jesus.
Matthew 13:55, Mark 3:20-21, John 7:5
When someone experiences and trusts in the resurrected Jesus Christ, they are eternally transformed.
1 Corinthians 15:3-8, Acts 1:14, Galatians 2:9
There’s no greater title/role to be known for than “servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ”.
