After the Jewish exiles finished building the Jerusalem temple we might expect spiritual life in the community to be at a high. The grandeur of the building and its services surely inspired great worship experiences. But within a few generations of the temple’s completion Ezra the scribe arrived in Jerusalem to find things otherwise.

Creed Greed

In the post-exilic period, a secure Jerusalem not only played a significant role in the faith of the Jewish people but also for the economy and political situation of the Persian Empire. How should the people of God respond in such situations? How might God’s people discern when our faith is being “taken advantage of” or even “used” by the powers in the world? Anytime our freedom to worship and live out our faith is threatened, we should pray and stand firm on our God given identity as His Sons and Daughters.
