Joel is a wake up call to distracted people. Joel prophesied right as Israel was in the middle of a severe locust plague. Famine and drought had wreaked terror on their crops, animals, and livelihoods. As Joel looks at the nation's situation, he sees God's hand judging Israel for their rebellion. Joel then looks ahead to an even greater judgment coming - the invasion, not just of locust swarms, but an enemy army. However, despite of God's hand of judgment - he is merciful and gracious, abounding in steadfast love and eager to forgive and restore. Joel looks forward to God's healing of his land an people and a day when God will judge all his enemies and set everything to rights again.
