Principles are nonspecific and require wisdom to apply. Precepts are very specific and require little if any thinking to apply. Throughout this section (Chapter 6), Paul gave Timothy several principles to apply concerning authority (vv. 1, 2), false teachers (vv. 3-6), and contentment (vv. 7-10).
But now when we get to verse 11 things change. He now turns his attention to giving Timothy precepts to follow (flee these things; pursue these; fight the good fight; lay hold of eternal life; guard your commission). And these precepts aren’t just for Timothy, they are good and applicable for each of us.
