Sermon: “Are you twiddling your thumbs?” Jude 20-25

November 21, 2021

Do you remember what Jesus told His disciples about when He would return? Jesus said, “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come” (Mark 13:32–33). Do you remember the promise the angels shared as Jesus ascended? “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Be on guard, keep awake, and remember He is coming soon.

“Each one of us comes into God’s house individually, from different backgrounds, families, situations, experiences, challenges, and joys. But here, in God’s house, something happens that makes us not just a collection of individuals but joined together as one person, one Body. This unity happens because we have been gathered by one Baptism in one faith in one Lord, our God whose greatness has been shown in our hearts and to the world in His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Here our Lord speaks, and we listen. And in the listening, we are moved to repentance and faith, true repentance of heart over our sins and true faith that knows that the Scriptures, the Word of God, are fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. May true joy motivate our praise of God here and all our days as God’s people scattered throughout the world.

Every year, the Epiphany of Our Lord is announced by the coming of the Magi from the East (on January 6) and the Baptism of Our Lord on the following Sunday. Likewise, every year on the next Sunday, John summarizes the significance of what we will hear concerning the earthly ministry of Jesus leading to the glory of His cross. Jesus enacts His first sign or miracle at a wedding in Cana. Turning water into wine signifies more than the joy of the marriage of God to His people. To Christians, it instantly calls to mind the Means by which God literally pours the new life of forgiveness into us through the blood of the cross of Christ. As the Bride of Christ, the Holy Church is empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a life of the reverent worship of God and loving service of one another and the world. The one Spirit works through the many members of the Body of Christ.
