Study Questions

1. Read Colossians 3:5-12. What needs to happen first in order for a Christ-follower to reflect the characteristics of the life-changing power of the gospel?

2. How is the Church described in Colossians 3:12? What makes her unique?

3. Give an example of when someone showed compassion to you.

4. When is it hard to be compassionate to others? (See also: Jonah 3:10-4:11.)

5. What does compassion in action look like a) in your church? b) in your community? c) as Christ-followers in the world?

6. Discuss the following statements Pastor Doug made in Sunday’s message. Do you agree with them? Why/Why not?

- God is the source of compassion, not man. (It is an Image-bearing expression when we display compassion.)

- Compassion is born of awareness to the needs of others. (Not an obligation.)

- Compassion is measured by action not words. (I John 3:17-18).

7. Look up the following passages and identify who the Lord Jesus felt compassion for and what He did in response: Matthew 9:36; 14:14; 15:32; 20:29-34; 25:31-46; Mark 1:40-45.

8. Read Luke 10:25-37. What is the main point Jesus was making in this parable? Give an example of a modern day ‘Good Samaritan’ situation. Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to be compassionate and what does that look like? (See also Hebrews 5:2; 1 Peter 3:8.)

How much do you think the music and songs you listen to influence your mind, thoughts, and values? Explain. 2. Read Colossians 3:16-17. How do you allow the Word of God to permeate your daily walk with Christ? Contextually, how do music and songs help you grow in the Word of God? Give examples. 3. What does it mean to ‘teach and admonish one another’ with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs? How does our church make provision for this to happen in our weekly worship services? Why is it important to do this together as the body of Christ and not just individually? 4. Look up the following passages and identify how and why these people worshiped God in song: - Moses crossing the Red Sea (Exodus 15:1-21) - David bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:14-15) - Mary’s song of praise (Luke 1:46-55) - Paul in prison (Acts 16:24-26) 5. What does this study mean to someone who doesn’t feel they are gifted musically? 6. Reflect on all the characteristics listed in our “Renewed” Study (Colossians 3:12-17). What areas are you growing in and in which areas do you still need to take off the old and put on the new?

Discuss the various characteristics and determine the one(s) that you still need to ‘put on’. 2. Read Matthew 7:46 and Romans 5:6-8. How is godly (agape) love different from human (worldly) love? 3. How are followers of Christ called to love in the following relationships? a. one another – 1 John 3:16-18 b. your neighbor – Luke 10:25-29;30-37; 7:36-39. c. your enemy – Matthew 5:43-47; 1 John 4:20; Romans 12:14,18-21 4. When has it been difficult for you to ‘agape’ love someone? Why? 5. What does godly love look like in a dysfunctional relationship (manipulating, enabling, controlling, abusive, etc.)? Discuss the following: a. Accept you can’t change a person b. Forgive them by not seeking revenge c. Don’t abandon them, yet, draw healthy boundaries d. Pray for them 6. How do you love a fellow-believer in Christ who has hurt you? See: Psalm 55:12-14; Matthew 5:23-24. 7. How has Christ Jesus shown His love for you? How has He continued to show His love for you? How does that impact your daily life? Your appreciation? Your gratitude? See also: John 15:13. 8. How is the Lord calling you to love others in His name this week…even if you don’t think they deserve it?
