“The Testimony of God” - Dr. Doug Melton

1 John 5:1-12

1. “This is He” — The Son of God is Jesus Christ.

Does your life give evidence that “this is He?”

Does your life give evidence that “this is He who came“ into your heart?

2. “This is He who came” — Historical, human event with spiritual, divine significance

Jesus is eternal, pre-existent -

“He who comes after me ranks before me, because He was before me.“

John 1:15

Jesus is supremely worthy -

“He who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.“

John 1:27

Jesus alone satisfies spiritual hunger -

“When the people saw the sign that He had done, they said, ‘This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!’ “

John 6:14

Jesus brings the dead to life -

“She said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.’ “

John 11:27

Jesus saves -

“So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, crying out, 'Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!' “

John 12:13

3. God has given us three who testify.

A. Water - The baptism of Jesus; the beginning of His ministry

B. Blood - The crucifixion of Jesus; the finishing work of His ministry

C. The Spirit - The empowering of Jesus; the perfect work of His ministry

4. Do you have the testimony in you?

Sun, July 14, ‘24 - AM Services “Blessed Assurance” - Dr. Doug Melton 1 John 5:13 “There is no question whatsoever, that is of greater importance to mankind, and what is more concerns every individual person to be well resolved in, than this: what are the distinguishing qualifications of those that are in favor with God, and entitled to His eternal rewards?” Jonathan Edwards How can I know if I am truly saved? 1. Compare John 20:31 with 1 John 5:13. “ … but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.“ Gospel of John 20:31 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.“ 1 John 5:13 A. Those who are not saved and know they’re not saved - (make no claim of salvation) B. Those who are saved but have no assurance they are saved - (doubt their salvation) C. Those who are saved and know they are saved - (assurance of salvation) D. Those who are not saved but believe they are saved - (false assurance of salvation) 2. Please consider who is saying this. 3. God has made it possible for you to know, NOW, your eternal destiny. 4. To believe is far more than intellectual assent. "We are saved by faith alone; but the faith that saves is not alone." An active staking of one’s life on the claims of God. Inner witness of the Spirit Outward evidence in your life 5. Assurance is founded on the objective truth of God’s Word. --
