“Casting Out Fear - Part 2” - Dr. Doug Melton

1 John 4:18

1. In this context, fear refers to the fear of judgment day.

A. When you come to understand God’s love for you, that perfect love drives out fear.

B. No fear of punishment

“If a man is conscious that he intends no harm to anyone, that he wishes good to all mankind, that he loves his God, and loves his fellowman for God’s sake, what has he to fear? He becomes the bravest of the brave, and often finds himself safe and unharmed in places where others dare not go.”

2. So how do we reconcile having both the fear of God and the love of God?

“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.“

Ecclesiastes 12:13

“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.“

1 Peter 2:17

“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.“

Isaiah 11:1-3a

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him.“

Psalm 103:11

Verse 13 - “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him.”

Verse 17 - “But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him.“

fear = phobos (phobia)

What is the fear of the Lord?

A. An understanding that nothing escapes God’s attention.

B. The encouragement to never run away from the goodness of God.

Compare John 20:31 with 1 John 5:13. “ … but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.“ Gospel of John 20:31 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.“ 1 John 5:13 A. Those who are not saved and know they’re not saved - (make no claim of salvation) B. Those who are saved but have no assurance they are saved - (doubt their salvation) C. Those who are saved and know they are saved - (assurance of salvation) D. Those who are not saved but believe they are saved - (false assurance of salvation) 2. Please consider who is saying this. 3.
