Brent Bounds: Developmental Phases

In this workshop session, Dr. Brent Bounds takes a look at the spiritual and psychological development of adolescents. The workshop explores how the stages of child and adolescent development shape and influence a youth’s understanding of and experience with the Gospel. Using the work of Erikson and Piaget and others, the group discusses some of the core needs of children at this age and how to uniquely engage them in youth ministry.

Liz Edrington: Tension

In this Rooted2014 talk, Liz Edrington talks about the temptation to avoid tension and how to overcome in light of the Gospel.

Mark Howard: Teaching Revelation

It’s likely that your youth have asked you to teach on Revelation. It’s also likely that you felt overwhelmed by the thought and have avoided the book like the plagues it describes. In this workshop, you will gain the confidence and practical tools needed to disciple your youth through this powerful, hope-filled and God-given book of the Bible.

Bethany Jenkins: Education and Vocation

One of the primary purposes of education is to prepare students vocationally. It is a training ground for work. Yet what are the mixed messages about vocation that high school sends? Does it matter, for example, that academic success is measured by differentiating labels like “honors” and “regulars”? Should we care that certain subjects like math are prioritized over other subjects like dance? In this workshop, we look at some of the assumptions about vocation that are embedded in the high school education system and how the gospel frees us from the consequences of those assumptions.

Peter Ong: Shame-Based Moralism

One of the most subtle means in which many youth ministries operate is on superstitious faith and/or shame-based moralism, which feeds into culture’s idolatry without even realizing it. This workshop examines our Gospel constants in the context of youth ministry in American culture. We explore some key doctrines of Gospel grace and how to provide a grid in which youth can understand and experience the Gospel in community inside and outside the church.

Chelsea Kingston: Teaching the Old Testament

Do you feel at a loss when students ask you how God could command the slaughter of men, women and children? How do you explain the unity between the Old and New Testaments and the consistency of God’s own character throughout? In this session, we discuss tools for teaching the Old Testament with the goal of helping students understand its relevance to the Christian faith and, therefore, their lives.

Mark Howard: Purity

Though the purity movement has been popular in many churches, it can have destructive consequences when not held in check by the Gospel of grace. In this workshop we explore the psychology behind the purity movement and how the Gospel of grace ministers to those feeling stained by sexual sin.
