What was I made for? Discipleship

Luke 9:23-24

Pastor Joey Ling

We are a church for the whole person & the whole world.

• Worship – Love Jesus

• Discipleship – Becoming More like Jesus

• Fellowship – Be Part of God’s Family

• Ministry – Serve in the Church

• Missions – Evangelism

What is a disciple?

“Follow me and I will send you out to fish for people”

—Mark 1:17

Discipleship is NOT automatic. Jesus knew that. That’s why he had a plan to intentionally invest into people to become mature disciples

Four phases of how Jesus built up his people

1. An invitation to explore: “Come and See” (John 1:35-39)

• What you going to do for someone this week that makes them more curious about Jesus?

• What are some things you can do at school to make them more curious about Jesus?

• What are some things you can do at home to show humility and to serve them?

2. An invitation to learn: “Come and follow me” (Matt. 4:18-22)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

3. An invitation to serve: “Come and be with me” (Mark 3:13-15)

Mark 3:13-15

“13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.”

What’s Jesus doing here? He’s turning up the heat! When you turn up the heat … you burn away the impurities — the stuff isn’t supposed to be there.

Discipleship is not an option, but it is a journey.
