Psalm 31:1-5 (NIV)

1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame;

deliver me in your righteousness.

2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue;

be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.

3 Since you are my rock and my fortress,

for the sake of your name lead and guide me.

4 Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,

for you are my refuge.

5 Into your hands I commit my spirit;

deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

Lectio Divina, or hearing of Scripture, invites us into God’s presence through the reading of and meditation over the focus text. Note that this type of reading is aimed more towards growing in relationship with God than gathering information about God.

1. Silence. Begin by preparing your heart as you enter God’s presence.

2. Read the Scripture slowly and out loud, lingering over the words that resonate with your heart.

3. Meditate over the Scripture by reading it a second time out loud. Savor the words and be aware of the Spirit’s guidance.

4. Prayer. Read the Scripture a third time, responding this time in prayer. Talk to God about these feelings you have experienced so far with the text.

5. Contemplate. Rest and wait in the presence of God as you allow the text to sink in.
