QUESTIONS FOR COMMUNITY -- Listen -- (What does the scripture say?) What negative observations does Solomon make about money?  What positive things does Solomon say about money? -- Learn -- (What does it mean?) Read Matthew 6:19-21. How is what Jesus said about treasure similar to what Solomon said? How is it different? Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it…” Why is this important for us to understand when thinking about money? -- Live --  (How does it apply to us?) What are some ways money (or lack of money) have impacted your life?  How does the gospel—the good news about Jesus—change how we view our money, time, and possessions?

LISTEN - What does the scripture say? What does Solomon say about the oppressed? Read Ecclesiastes 3:16. What further observations can you make about what Solomon sees? What does he conclude from all the oppression he sees? LEARN - What does it mean? Read Ecclesiastes 3:17 and 12:14. Taking these verses into account, what does Solomon ultimately believe about the evil he sees? LIVE - How does it apply to us? How do you respond to the evil you see or even the evil that touches your own life? What are some things that you know about God’s character that help you when you are in the midst of evil? How does the cross and Christ’s victory over death bring us comfort as we live in a fallen and broken world?

What is that tension? What does Solomon say about what God does in this passage? -- LEARN -- (What does it mean?) Why do you think Solomon set the poem up the way he did? What does it teach us about life? What do you think Solomon mean by “He has made everything beautiful in its time”? How does God’s work compare to man’s work? -- LIVE -- (How does it apply to us?) What season of life are you in right now? Is it a hard season? An easy season? How do you see God in the midst of this season? How do you deal with the tension of longing for eternity, yet living life here in a fallen world? How does knowing that “God’s work endures forever” give you hope?

Why might Solomon be so concerned about leaving his work to the man who comes after him? We see in Genesis 2:15 that God put Adam in the garden to “work it and keep it.” Based on that verse and on Ecclesiastes 2:24-25, what was God’s original intent for work? -- LIVE -- (How does it apply to us?) How do you feel about your work? How do you view yourself in light of your work? How does your relationship with God and how He sees you enter in to your work?

QUESTIONS FOR COMMUNITY -- LISTEN -- (What does the scripture say?) What activities did Solomon engage in to find pleasure? To what extent did he pursue these things? What conclusion did he reach? -- LEARN -- (What does it mean?) The word “heart” appears 5 times in this passage. How is Solomon’s heart involved in his pursuit of pleasure? The words “my” or “myself” appear 17 times in this passage. What does that tell you about Solomon’s focus and motives? -- LIVE -- (How does it apply to us?) How do you think discontentment plays into the pursuit of pleasure? In what areas of life are you most likely to pursue pleasure? Solomon is an example of sinful pursuit of pleasure, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t to experience pleasure. Read Psalm 16:11 and Psalm 149:4. What do these verses tell you about pleasure?

The word “vanity” can also be translated “meaningless”. Have you ever felt life was meaningless? What did you do with those feelings? How do you know that life isn’t meaningless? How do you find meaning?
