The law of God shows us our misery, which in turn leads us to questions of God's justice and mercy. When confronted with God's justice, our tendency is to question the validity of the law itself or the validity of God's response. In short, we plead for mercy without understanding that you can't have mercy with justice, and justice always costs someone something.
