The Purpose of Humanity

Genesis: Episode 2

April 5, 2021 • Genesis 1:26—2:3

For further reflection:

1. Read Genesis 1:28: “God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”

Summarize God’s command in your own words. What does it look like to live out the callings in this verse today?

2. Read Genesis 2:3: “Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.”

Now read Mark 2:27: “Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”

God set an example for us in the way he took time to rest on the seventh day, also called the Sabbath day. The Mark verse tells us that this day of rest is for our own good. Why is it important for us to practice the discipline of rest, even if we are not feeling tired?

3. In Genesis, we learn that every type of work is an opportunity to reflect and represent God. Think about an area in your life that feels mundane and lacking in purpose. In light of this devotional, how might you change your perspective on this area of your life?
