James: A Life of Faith

My Brother's Keeper

July 26, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

"Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love" we sing in Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. It's an honest admission that our hearts, while cleaned and being renewed, yet struggle with sin. In our final sermon in the series A Life of Faith, we will learn from James about the need for community, the need for others to help us as we follow Christ. Sign up online, bring a friend, and join us for worship on the lawn this Sunday! Pastor Josh

Let Us Pray

July 19, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

How does prayer fit into your life of faith? What does communion with God look like for you in a normal week? James encourages us with good news about prayer—God hears your prayers, God acts, and therefore prayer is powerful. This truth should change the way we go about our lives of faith. Grab your shade, sunscreen, and a friend (very few churches are able to meet right now so this is a perfect time to invite friends, coworkers, neighbors) and join us this Sunday as we learn from James about prayer. Pastor Josh

Suffering with Patience

July 12, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

One person from Redeemer recently said, “I had no idea the book of James was so practical. It seems like his letter is speaking directly to me in my situation in life.” This week James speaks about what it means to suffer well as a Christian. It’s a topic that each of us need to think deeply upon as we seek to live a life of faith in these uncertain times. Grab your sunscreen, chairs, and friends and join us this Sunday for worship on the lawn as we consider James 5:7-11. Pastor Josh

What is Your Life?

July 5, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

What is your life? That is the question James asks this audience. Is your life more than your success? Is it lived for something bigger than self? How we answer these questions is immediately connected to our self-conception, the way we treat others, and most importantly how we relate to God, who is the lawgiver & judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. Join us this Sunday as we consider James 4:13-5:6 during our in-person worship. As always, bring a friend, register online to reserve a spot, don’t forget sunscreen, chairs, etc. Finally, we are now REQUIRING all participants over the age of 6 to wear masks during the entire service. Pastor Josh

Who are you to judge?

June 28, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

“Who are you to judge?” That is the pointed question that James asks. It is ever relevant both for the Church and the world. Join us this Sunday for in-person worship on the lawn with our lawn chairs, blankets, and hats. We’ll consider it together! Pastor Josh

Glorious Things

June 14, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

James was a prominent pastor of the ancient church that wrote to fellow Christians about how to live a genuine life of faith. In one section of his letter he asks a series of questions that invite introspection. This week, James asks, “What causes fights and quarrels among you?” Pastor Josh

What is your vision for the good life?

May 31, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne & Derek Rishmawy

What is your vision for the good life? What would need to be true for life to be beautiful? Most of us wrestle with these questions, especially since the world’s view of success is so tied to self. Thankfully, James points us in the way of wisdom and instructs us on what it means to live a spiritual life. Tune in this Sunday to join us for worship as we consider James 3:13-18. Pastor Josh

Taming the Tongue

May 24, 2020 • Derek Rishmawy

If you had to guess what the most dangerous muscle in your body was, what would you say? In this week's passage, James 3:1-12, we're going to see why James thinks it's our tongues and why we need to control it. As small as it is, it can cause you a world of hurt. Even more, we'll see how the gospel helps us train it to glorify God instead of cursing our neighbors. Derek Rishmawy Campus Minister, RUF UCI

Faith Works

May 17, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

This Sunday we will be considering the most widely known, as well as the most controversial, section in James’ letter, his teaching on faith & works. Tune in with us to be challenged by James and to think about your own faith. Also, don’t forget to download and print the outline of James 2:14-26 that I’ve prepared to help us follow along with James’ argument. Pastor Josh

Show No Partiality

May 10, 2020 • Rev. Adam Feichtmann

Adultery, murder, and… favoritism! James is a book that shows us what life looks like when we have faith in Jesus Christ. When James takes time to describe what a life of faith looks like, one of the first things he addresses is the sin of favoritism, and specifically Christians who are showing partiality to the rich over the poor. We might want to downplay the gravity of this sin today, but for James, he takes this issue seriously and even compares showing favoritism to adultery and murder. This Sunday we will study James 1:9-11 and 2:1-13 together, not only looking at what James tells us not to do, but more specifically James’ rich theological foundational of why and how we ought not show favoritism. Pastor Adam

Receive then Do

May 3, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

Receive Then Do… that is the phrase we’ll use on Sunday as we continue to learn from James.  In his letter to the ancient church, James taught that God uses his word to bring about new Spiritual life in his people, and that this new life leads to a change in lifestyle.  Join us as we consider the blessing of this new lifestyle as well as its unique character.  Pastor Josh

A Life of Faith - Part 2

April 26, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

Do you want to be happy in life?   It may sound counterintuitive, but James tells us to get better at dealing with temptation.  If we are to do that we must understand the truth about temptation as well as the truth about God.   Join us on Sunday as we take up James 1:12-18 and grow together in our life of faith.   Pastor Josh

A Life of Faith - Part 1

April 19, 2020 • Rev. Josh Hahne

This Sunday we begin a new series on the book of James called “A Life of Faith.” James was the half-brother of Jesus who eventually became a prominent pastor in the early church and served the Church in Jerusalem. Drawing from his experience in ministry he writes to Christians who struggle, as we do, with various trials and who need wisdom from God. Thankfully, in his letter, James helps us by explaining what it means to put our faith into practice. Join us this Sunday and together we will learn from James! Pastor Josh
