The Prayer Meeting
September 28, 2022 • Pastor Paul Edwards
The practice of meeting weekly for prayer began in the 19th Century in the revivalism of Charles Finney and D. L. Moody. But does the Bible require a weekly meeting for prayer? Listen as our pastor explains the origins of the midweek prayer meeting and takes us through the Book of Acts to see when the New Testament church met for prayer.
The Ballast of Sovereign Love
May 8, 2022 • Pastor Paul Edwards
The first two chapters of 1 Samuel are a moving drama of God's sovereign actions to bring about the birth of His greatest prophet. This prophet would be the "kingmaker." In this drama, we learn that God is at work in the bleakest of circumstances to bring about His eternal purposes. God was at work in Hannah's drama, and He's at work in your drama, too!
May Christ Be Exalted
May 15, 2022 • Grant Blackmer • Philippians 1:19–26
The Apostle Paul is confident he will be redeemed from his imprisonment because Christ is - and will be - exalted through his life or his death. No matter how volatile our circumstances become, one thing that remains constant is our ability to glorify Christ in those circumstances.
He Who Began A Good Work in You
November 11, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
What is "the good work" which God the Father began in us? When did He begin this work? How will we know when this work is completed? In this message we examine the broad scope of the Trinity's work in saving us: the commencement of the work, the continuation of the work, and the consummation of the work as described by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians.
Sin's Deceptive and Destructive Progression Displayed in Our Speech
June 24, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
James tells us that the "tongue is a world of iniquity, set on fire of hell." In 1 John 1:1-2:3, the Apostle John reveals the progression of sin's deceitfulness: from hypocrisy, to duplicity, to apostasy. This progression is on display as our tongues reveal our hearts in what we say.
Between Babylon and Jerusalem: Remember
May 27, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
In 600 BC Jerusalem was sacked in a ravage attack by the Babylonians. Psalm 137 is a beautiful song of lament by the Jewish remnant who were carried away from their homeland to captivity in Babylon. The Psalm moves from reflective longing rooted in emotion at the beginning to recollected learning rooted in God's word at the end. Memory is a powerful emotion that must always be kept in check by the promises of God.
Missing Millennials in the Church
May 20, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
The Millennial Generation (ages 21 - 37) is abandoning the traditional forms of worship for new forms of community that often fulfill the same functions as traditional religious communities. Pastor Edwards analyzes research from Harvard on this trend, and shows how a properly functioning, healthy church as defined by the Bible provides everything and more that the Millennial Generation is looking for.
The Godly Heritage in My Mother's Bible
May 13, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
The Apostle Paul urges Timothy to continue in the things he has learned. We examine the content of what Timothy has learned, the character of those from whom he learned it (his mother, his grandmother, and Paul), and the objective of knowing the holy Scriptures.
Boasting Excluded, Pride I Abase
February 25, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
Our wisdom, our strength, and our wealth all come from God. Just as quickly as these were attained, they can be lost in the providence of God. Therefore we have nothing to boast in except the Lord's lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness, which we can never lose.
Stop Struggling with Sin
January 28, 2018 • Pastor Paul Edwards
If you want to stop struggling with sin, stop struggling with sin. Stop focusing your efforts on overcoming sin. Rather, redirect your efforts to memorizing and meditating on the word of God, which will sanctify you by moving you away from the presence of sin and toward the presence of Christ.
