The trials, suffering, calamities, tragedies, and disappointments we experience in this present world are the 'backlash' of a greater cosmic struggle of spiritual forces who are opposed to Christ and His people. The Bible describes this struggle as "darkness." This darkness is governed or ruled by powerful forces.
