Part 2

March 7, 2021 • Executive Pastor Katie Ellis

Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “Welcome” to 502-754-3212 SERMON GUIDE Book of Galatians Part 2 Big Idea: There’s no such thing as a good Christian. Galatians 1:6-24 I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ. Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed. Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to understand that the gospel message I preach is not based on mere human reasoning. I received my message from no human source, and no one taught me. Instead, I received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ. You know what I was like when I followed the Jewish religion—how I violently persecuted God’s church. I did my best to destroy it. I was far ahead of my fellow Jews in my zeal for the traditions of my ancestors. But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being.Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. Instead, I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascus. Then three years later I went to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed with him for fifteen days. The only other apostle I met at that time was James, the Lord’s brother. I declare before God that what I am writing to you is not a lie. After that visit I went north into the provinces of Syria and Cilicia. And still the churches in Christ that are in Judea didn’t know me personally. All they knew was that people were saying, “The one who used to persecute us is now preaching the very faith he tried to destroy!” And they praised God because of me. Three Ways You Know You Believe the Gospel 1. You felt God call you (vs. 6) 2. Jesus was revealed to you (vs. 11-12) 3. You are being transformed (vs 13 & 23) Discussion Questions 1. Talk about something you fell for that was “too good to be true”. 2. As you are seeking Jesus, do you feel pushed or do you feel called? 3. Have you had an “aha” moment when you suddenly grasped the Gospel message? 4. What in your life is different that you believe is the result of putting your faith in Jesus? CONNECT Connect with us! Souls With Wings - Galatians 6:12-16

Part 9 • April 25, 2021 • Lead Pastor Jason Isaacs

Sermon Guide Book of Galatians Part 9 - Because of Jesus Big Idea: There’s no such thing as a better Christian. Galatians 6:12-16 12Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save. 13 And even those who advocate circumcision don’t keep the whole law themselves. They only want you to be circumcised so they can boast about it and claim you as their disciples. 14 As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died. 15 It doesn’t matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation. 16 May God’s peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle; they are the new people of God. The Gospel You are more weak and sinful than you believe, but more loved and accepted by God than you know Discussion Questions: 1.Share one thing you have learned from this series that you didn’t know before. 2. Does the statement “halfway to being a Christian” strike a chord with you? In what way? 3. How has this series helped you fully embrace the truth of the Gospel, that salvation comes from believing in Jesus and nothing else? 4. Do you feel like a relationship with Jesus has “given you wings”? 5. What thing in your life makes you feel most valuable? Are you still putting your faith in yourself? How can your group pray for you?

Fruit Of The Spirit - Galatians 5:13-26

Part 8 • April 18, 2021 • Associate Pastor Megan Gardner

Sermon Guide Book of Galatians Part 8 - Fruit of the Spirit Big Idea: I know I’m a Christian but I don’t always act like one. Galatians 5:13-26 13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. 14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[a] 15 But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another. 16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another. What to remember as you’re growing: 1.Fruit doesn’t appear overnight. 2. I’ll never stop sinning, but that’s okay. 3. Who I am right now is who Jesus died for. Discussion Questions: 1.Talk about things that seem to take forever and you have little patience for. 2. Who is someone you know that you believe is a good example of what a Christian should look like? Do you think of them as still struggling with sin? 3. When you look back, what is a way the Holy Spirit has grown you? 4. What’s an area of frustration where you aren’t growing fast enough? How can your group be praying for you?
