Purpose

Part 2

January 10, 2021 • Associate Pastor Joe Strothman

Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “HCNEW” to 33777 SERMON GUIDE The Happiness Advantage Part 2- Purpose Big Idea: Your life’s purpose is to live with purpose. John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 1 Corinthians 3: 4-9 When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building. Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Colossians 3: 23-24 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. How To Know Your Life Has Purpose 1. Are you working with enthusiasm? 2. Are you focusing on eternity? 3. Are you living for Jesus? Discussion Questions 1. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up ? 2. Talk about a time when what you were doing felt purposeful and in partnership with God. 3. How would you describe your relationship with God, as a Co-worker with purpose? 4. Of the three questions asked to know if your life has purpose, which one are you struggling with the most? How can your group be praying for you? CONNECT Connect with us! Forgiveness

Part 5 • January 31, 2021 • Lead Pastor Jason Isaacs

Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “HCNEW” to 33777 SERMON GUIDE The Happiness Advantage Part 5 - Forgiveness Big Idea: Jesus doesn’t just give us eternal life, he gives us a better life too. John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. Matthew 18:21-35 Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!” “Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned—to pay the debt. “But the man fell down before his master and begged him, ‘Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’ Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt. “But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. “His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full. “When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ 34Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. 35“That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.” How Jesus Defined Forgiveness 1. Be filled with pity 2. Release the one who owes you 3. Forgive the debt owed Luke 23:24 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing." God forgive ________ for ________. Discussion Questions 1. What’s the silliest thing you’ve seen someone hold a grudge for? 2. When you hear Jesus say there is no limit to forgiveness, what is your immediate response? 3. Has someone ever forgiven you for something you did? 4. Is there a hurt you are struggling to forgive and let go of ? How can your group be praying for you? CONNECT Connect with us! Self-Control

Part 4 • January 24, 2021 • Associate Pastor Megan Gardner

Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “HCNEW” to 33777 SERMON GUIDE The Happiness Advantage Part 4 - Self-Control Big Idea: You’re only as strong as your greatest temptation. John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 2 Peter 1:3-9 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. Matthew 4:1-11 The Temptation of Jesus 1. Tempted by hunger (instant gratification) - quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 2. Tempted by ego (human approval)- quotes Deuteronomy 6:16 3. Tempted by materialism (wealth)- quotes Deuteronomy 6:13 I want to stop __________, but I can’t. Turn self-control into Spirit-Control. Surrender your temptations to God, read and learn His Word, and allow the Holy Spirit to change your desires Discussion Questions 1. Share a New Year discipline/resolution that you started in 2021. How is it going? 2. Talk about how your desires have changed since you started following Jesus. 3. What choices are you making that might be counteracting the Holy Spirit working in your life? 4. NEW If you are new to Hope City text “HCNEW” to 33777 SERMON GUIDE The Happiness Advantage Part 3- Gratitude Big Idea: I can’t change my circumstances but I can change my perspective. John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Three Keys to a Grateful Perspective 1. Stop it (Exodus 16:3, Numbers 11:4-6) 2. See it (James 1:2-4) 3. Say it (Luke 22:17,19) Discussion Questions 1. How did your family open gifts? Free for all or one at a time? 2. Share something that you are grateful for right now. Is it hard for you to immediately think of something? 3. Is there something difficult from your life that you can share that you are now grateful for? 4. Which one of the 3 ways (stop it, see it, say it) do you struggle with the most?
