The Silence of the Church on LGBT Issues & Steps Toward Change

June 10, 2022 • Dr. Julie Hamilton

From her background, Dr. Hamilton shares the problems she sees that contribute to the silence of the church on LGBTQ issues and possible solutions. Dr. Hamilton is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice. She is a former Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Graduate Counseling Psychology program at Palm Beach Atlantic University (2004-2009). Dr. Hamilton served as President of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality 2009 - 2011. She has provided a number of interviews in various media outlets including video documentaries, radio programs, and television shows such as the Dr. Oz Show. She speaks in churches, colleges, and schools and also conducts seminars for pastors and Christian leaders. She is also the co-editor of The Handbook of Therapy for Unwanted Homosexual Attractions: A Guide to Treatment.

Practical Issues in Addressing Sex-Discordant Gender Identity

In this breakout session, Dr. Hruz talks about practical ways to interact with and respond to those struggling with Sex Discordant Gender Identity. Laura Perry was invited to the stage to share more details about her transgender journey. This is an interactive session where dialogue was encouraged and many great questions were answered. Dr. Paul Hruz is an academic pediatric endocrinologist (hormone specialist) and tenured physician-scientist with faculty appointments in both Pediatric and Cellular Biology and Physiology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Hruz has over 20 years of clinical experience in caring for children with disorders of sexual development. He has received certification in Healthcare Ethics from the National Catholic Bioethics Center and is a regular contributor to his universities course on Research Ethics for graduate students. He has served as a consultant for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and is an active member of the Catholic Medical Association. Dr. Hruz has also assisted in the Christian Medical and Dental Association in reviewing scientific evidence for the medical management of sex-discordant gender identity.
