When we are gripping tightly onto something else for our fulfillment and security, it is impossible for us to receive God's grace and follow Him with our whole heart. Clenched fists don't leave much room for receiving. Neither do they encourage giving and generosity. We can’t offer everything if we're clinging to anything. Money is a revealer and tangible trust. It provides us with the most visible way to see the condition of our hearts and who we trust. The act of giving takes trusting God out of the realm of theory and put into practice.

Many of us underestimate the dominant force that money possesses. It is strong and powerful, capable of capturing our affection and attention. In our quest to develop generous hearts, we have to be aware of what money does to us and how it influences our hearts and eyes. We can't ignore that war taking place for our heart's allegiance, with one of the major battlegrounds being our money and possessions.

We all have a relationship with money that influences and affects our faith, our heart and our relationship with God. It’s easier to ignore the problem and to spend away or not think about it at all. This leaves one in a vulnerable state. If we don’t pay attention, it will cost us our hearts. Being irresponsible with our money isn’t necessarily about one’s actions, but rather not taking the time and intention necessary to reflect on what it is you believe about your money. What drives your motives? What convictions do you have about your finances? And most importantly as believers, do you believe God has a purpose for your money?
