That's Going to Leave a Mark

REJOICE! WORSHIP | FEBRUARY 27

February 27, 2022 • Luke 9:28–36

When I was in my early 20’s, I was on a church softball team near Buffalo, NY. We weren’t all that great, but we had a lot of fun. One Sunday after worship, we wore our uniforms and got out on the field. We got there about 20 minutes before the game, so we just having some fun, warming up. I was on third base. When you are warming up, you know how you are just throwing and catching balls with each other? The right fielder threw a ball to me, and I leaned in to catch it. What I didn’t realize, or even see, was that, at the same time, the second baseman also threw me a ball. I saw the one from right field. And just as I was catching it, the other ball hit me square in the forehead. The next thing I knew, I was on my back on the ground, with a couple of the guys leaning over me, and I heard one of them saying, “That’s going to leave a mark.” Yeah. It did. The marks that get left on us are sometimes visible, and sometimes not. They are sometimes temporary, sometimes permanent. The mark left by an encounter with God not only is a marker to our past, but it also helps to determine our future.
