COVENANTS

REJOICE! WORSHIP | MAR 21

March 21, 2021

As we go through life, there are certain memories that we want to hold on to, things we will never forget. It might be the day that somebody special first said those three words, “I love you.” It might be the day you bought your first car. Today we read the prophet’s words saying that God is going to give us a new covenant and that we would know his teachings, and they would be written on our heart. So, what does that mean? Is that a special memory that will carry throughout our lives? Well, that’s part of it.

Now interestingly enough, in our Old Testament lesson, it says that God sent serpents among the whining people—at first, that sounds kind of vengeful. It sounds like God was so fed up with the people he just was going to send serpents and give them some pain just like they were giving him some pain, but I don't think that was the point of it, and I don't think that's really the way that God operates. Don't we sometimes have consequences that move people in the right direction? And, in fact, isn't it that consequences that often move us the right way? Now what I want you to know today is that even when there are consequences for our actions, God does not always remove those consequences. God often provides a way for us. And he does it because he loves us.

Remember a covenant is not like a contract because it's a blessing from a more powerful entity to a less powerful one. It is not a contract. In this case, it is a blessing from God.

Today we have the story of Abraham. It’s another covenant story. God came to Abraham when he was 99 years old and told him that he and his wife would have a baby. That’s preposterous! But God said I will make my covenant between me and you and make you exceedingly numerous. Abraham was to become the father of a nation, the nation Israel. Saint Paul gives us the answer in verses 21 and 22. “…being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness.” I think the key line is, “…being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.” Can you count on God’s promises of redemption through Jesus Christ? Yes, you can.

A covenant is something altogether different from a contract. It isn’t a fair trade. It is an agreement between a greater and a lesser. In this case, between God and His people. God is all-powerful. We aren’t. God owns everything. We don’t. There is no contest. We are not equal parties. So God makes covenants; promises, he gives a whole lot and we give little—like acknowledging him and thanking him and trying to be thankful all our days. He is merciful and loving and amazing. He keeps his promises. We don’t always keep ours.
