WHO ARE YOU?

REJOICE! WORSHIP | Dec 13

December 13, 2020

In today’s Gospel, the priests and Levites ask John the baptizer, “Who are you?” They may as well have asked us the very same question. What did John say? He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord.” Who are we? We are people of God. We are God’s own children, adopted into the family at baptism. And, as much as we sometimes want to think of ourselves as the Messiah, we are not. Just like John was not. He was there to point to the Messiah. And so are we. That’s the job.
