It has been well sated, “Bitterness is a poison we drink hoping that someone else will die.” The Bible talks about a stubborn root that can grow in the soil of our hearts, called a root of bitterness (Heb. 12:15). Ahithophel was King David’s mighty counselor. Yet, he was sorely disappointed and became bitter at David for committing a heinous act of immorality. Rather than trusting in the judgment of God, Ahithophel took vengeance on David himself. The bitterness that was buried within his heart finally manifested itself. Thus, outward signs are not always the strongest indicator of what is happening on the inside.
