Do you have something worth celebrating in your life? This week, Jeremy Little finished our sermon series through the book of Esther. The Jews in this last chapter inaugurate a celebration of Purim to remember the deliverance of the Jews from the plot of Haman. As followers of Jesus, we also have much to celebrate! We have experienced the greatest reversal of all time - we were once far from God, but through Jesus we are made children of God and after death, we are given life with Him forever! Our joy isn't a fleeting emotion, but a deeply rooted truth that supersedes circumstances. Our appropriate response to the work of Jesus should be a life marked by celebration and joy! The story of Esther reassures us that God is able to turn situations around unexpectedly to bring about joy, honor, and victory for His people. Is your response to trials and hardships an acknowledgment of your weakness and a reliance on God’s strength? This week, Chris Nagel continued our series in Esther. Haman’s pride brought about humiliation, in contrast, through Esther’s humility to pray and fast for the freedom of their people, God showed up powerfully to bring about change that would not have been possible apart from Him. It's in our weakness that we become reliant on God to empower us and it’s through our weakness that God is glorified all the more! We have to fight against egotism and pride in our hearts that prevents us from seeing the power of God through us. Let us be people who are prayerfully dependent on God and exercise courageous obedience to step into the areas He calls us. Are you willing to be used by God, even if it’s a risk to your position, status, influence or income? Following Jesus is a recognition that our lives are meant to be poured out for others. This week, Brian Barr continued our series through the book of Esther looking at the pivotal moment when Esther agrees to go before the king to save her people. While the name of God isn't mentioned in the book, God’s activity is undeniable. God placed Esther in a place of prominence - with fame, beauty, favor and wealth - to be strategically used to save her people. Likewise, we are strategically placed by God in our workplaces, neighborhoods and families to be used by God and to live sacrificially for those around us. We follow Jesus’ example of great sacrifice on our behalf and extend His love and care for others. Sometimes when we look at the state of the world around us, it can be difficult to see where God is at work. How should we respond, as followers of Jesus, when God appears to be silent and absent? We can take great encouragement from the story of Esther, a story in which God’s name is not directly mentioned, but God’s work is evident. God moves through quiet providence in our lives.
