Disciple: Commune

Disciple: What it Means to Practice Spiritual Disciplines - Brian Barr

January 21, 2024 • Brian Barr • 1 Timothy 4:7–8

We grow in meaningful connection with God through consistently and intentionally engaging in spiritual disciplines. God gives us practices through which we can experience God as our Father. 1 Timothy 4:7 says to “train yourself to be godly.”  We will not automatically have a close relationship with God because we say “yes” to Jesus. If we are to truly experience God as Father, it will require effort, training and sacrifice on our part. We must introduce healthy habits into our lives that cultivate space for us to engage in spiritual disciplines and eliminate habits that are not helping us to meaningfully commune with God. As we keep showing up and seeking God, He is faithful to meet with us and we experience a deep connection with Him. Disciple: What it Means to Experience God as Father - Brian Barr

January 14, 2024 • Brian Barr • Matthew 6:9, 1 John 3:1, John 14:6

Everything in life changes when we experience God as Father. For the Christian, this is our reality through Jesus! This new identity - as a son or daughter of God - is the most significant truth about us. The temptation is for us to find our identity in the things we do or the things that have happened to us. But it's through our relationship with God our Father that we find our worth, true identity and the love we so desperately long for. Our Father isn't disappointed in us. He will not abandon or reject us. We have been adopted. The Holy Spirit removes our shame and guilt and brings us value, belonging and purpose. He pours the love of the Father into our hearts. Being a disciple of Jesus means growing in intimacy with our Father in heaven. You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. Disciple: What it Means to Follow Jesus - Brian Barr

January 7, 2024 • Brian Barr • Luke 11:9, John 15:4, 1 Chronicles 28:9, Jeremiah 29:13, Hosea 10:12

What is your aim in 2024? As Christians, we are called to be disciples of Jesus - our aim is already set for us! Discipleship is apprenticeship - the highest form of intentional training. Being a disciple requires us to invest in our relationship with Jesus - spending time with Him, hearing His voice, and doing life with Him. But many Christians today struggle to experience a meaningful life with Jesus. Many think having a relationship with Jesus is about living “for” God, when it’s actually about living “with” God! The God of the universe wants to know us - that’s an invitation we can’t be casual about. We can’t let distractions and the cares of life get in the way of this one thing. With the start of a new year, let’s set our eyes on what matters most - knowing God and doing all of life with Him.
