Disciple: Conform - Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ - Brian Barr

April 14, 2024 • Brian Barr • Romans 6

As followers of Jesus, our testimony is that we are dead to sin and are now alive to God. But what does that mean? This week, Brian Barr continued in our series Disciple: Conform, looking at how we conform to the likeness of Jesus by fighting sin in our lives. Before becoming a Christian, we were enslaved to sin. But when we turn to Jesus, our old self dies and we experience freedom from the power of sin and walk in the newness of life in Christ! It doesn't mean we are incapable of sinning, but that we are free from sin’s dominion in our lives. Now we fight against the temptation to sin and present ourselves to God as instruments of righteousness. Walking in the grace of God means that we accept that Jesus has both forgiven and cleansed us! We are no longer dirty and full of shame. We are given the Holy Spirit who empowers us to walk in victory over sin and gives us new desires for righteousness.

Disciple: Conform - Walk by the Spirit - Nate Miller

April 28, 2024 • Nate Miller • Galatians 5:16–25

What does it look like to grow in spiritual maturity? This week, Nate Miller finished our Disciple: Conform series looking at how we change to be more like Jesus. Like plants produce fruit as they grow, followers of Jesus are also called to produce fruit of the Spirit in their lives. In Galatians, Paul says that we are to “walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” As followers of Jesus, we must submit to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Being led by the Spirit is like being led by a father who is gentle and full of love for his children. We also start living by the Spirit’s desires and starving the sinful desires of our flesh. It’s in an environment that is submissive to the Spirit that we can begin to bear fruit of Godliness in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Disciple: Conform - 5 Steps When You Sin - Chris Nagel

April 21, 2024 • Chris Nagel • Hebrews 4:16, Romans 6:1, Romans 11—12, Galatians 5:16

What should our response to sin be in our lives? This week, Chris Nagel continued our series Disciple: Conform giving us five steps to help us in turning from sin. While we no longer are enslaved to sin when we become a Christian, we will still battle the temptation to sin. It’s not only external threats that we fight against - like Satan or the world, but we also battle the internal threat of our own flesh. We must fight sin in our lives by running to Jesus and his throne of grace. He has given us a new identity and it’s from this new identity that we have the power to fight sin. We must turn and point our desires towards God, relentlessly pulling up the roots of sinful desires in our lives. God has given us the Holy Spirit to empower us to walk in a manner that glorifies Him. But we also must be ruthless to cut out anything in our lives that leads us to sin. Jesus is the great physician that came for the sick - it’s your very sin that drew Jesus to you in the first place. So in our battle against sin, we must be people who run boldly to the throne of his grace. You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning. Disciple: Conform - Stand Firm - Brian Barr

April 7, 2024 • Brian Barr • Colossians 2:15, 1 Peter 5:8, Ephesians 6:10–18

In today’s culture, we desire to pursue lives that are comfortable and problem-free. But the reality is that as Christians, we live in wartime. This week, Brian Barr continued in our Disciple: Conform series looking at how we stand against the schemes of the enemy. When we choose to follow Jesus, we also gain an enemy who works against us to make us ineffective and cause us to disbelieve God’s truth. Scripture tells us to stand against the schemes of the Devil. We aren't told to win or achieve victory, we are told to stand because Jesus has already won the decisive victory. We don’t have to be afraid because God’s victory over Satan is final. But while we live in this in-between time where we are waiting for Jesus to return and make all things new, we must continue to stand against the enemy's tactics to tempt, deceive, accuse, intimidate, and divide. We resist him by strengthening ourselves in the Lord. You can join our OneLife Sunday morning gatherings via livestream at 9am and 11am CST every Sunday morning.
