Hope in the Dark

Peace in the Pandemic

Refuge

May 31, 2020 • Kim Edmondson • Psalm 61:1–2, Psalm 55, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 121:4, Psalm 91

In this Hope in the Dark series, we’ve read the word terrified several times. The disciples were terrified. The crew of Paul’s ship was terrified. Jonah was terrified. You know that feeling, too. It’s the sweaty palms and the knot in the pit of your stomach. Its’ the feeling you cannot shake no matter how hard you try. You feel it in the air. It’s the thing that keeps you tossing and turning at night. The thread of distraction that runs throughout your day. It’s in every news report and as you open your social media? It makes your heart race. When it feels like the world is crumbling around us, deep down we know—it’s not supposed to be this way. The Good news is that we are not left to face our fear alone. We have a God who loves us and protects us. THE BIG IDEA: God is always ready to help in times of trouble.

Storms can be beautiful and scary. Storms bring problems but they don’t last forever. Some storms are avoidable, most are not. Storms are a part of life. THE BIG IDEA: The strongest storms can’t stop the promises of God.

Second Chances

There’s an old saying that all of us are either in the middle of a storm, about to walk into a storm, or just coming out of a storm. We all need to know how to get through what we’re going through. We all need clarity as we try to recover from what we’ve been through. And wisdom says that we should prepare for whatever is coming around the corner. Some storms are sent. Some storms are caused. ALL storms can be used by God for something better. THE BIG IDEA: Sometimes the Storm is actually a second chance.

The Stormiest Day

Ever found yourself in a storm of life? If so, then there is a day in the life of Christ that you need to know about. Aside from the Crucifixion, it is the most stressful day of his life. A roaring sequence of bad news, demanding crowds, and doubting friends. 24 hours in which Jesus faces the same gale-force fears that you and I face. Waves of pressure slam. Winds of anxiety blow. Clouds of darkness billow. Yet through it all, Jesus remains calm. Let’s see how Jesus stays calm on the stormiest day. THE BIG IDEA: When you are in the storm, let Jesus in the boat.

Flattening the Curve On Fear

May 3, 2020 • Chris Edmondson • Matthew 8:23–27, Mark 4:41

Many times, our faith deteriorates as our circumstances deteriorate. When that happens, our faith is quickly overcome by fear, and the future looks dark. We all have a fear of losing control of things in our life. When life seems out of control it does not mean that God is not in control. It is not our responsibility to control our circumstances – it is God’s. THE BIG IDEA: We grow in storms in ways we can’t in the calm.
