Dissolving Anger

October 21, 2018 • Chris Edmondson • James 1:18–22, Ephesians 4:31–32, Proverbs 19:11

We all hold a scorecard. It’s where we’ve scribbled down who has hurt us and what they have done to us. This scorecard shapes and influences the way we see the world, how we view ourselves, and sometimes, our perspective of God himself. Everything is framed by these mental notes. Each tally mark has us seething with anger. We want people to pay. We hope others understand the pain they’ve caused. We desire to produce some form of justice that either gets us what we want or punishes the one who kept us from getting it. THE BIG IDEA: Anger can dissolve even if the issue doesn’t get resolved.

What Does Anger Do?

Have you ever got a warm, fresh chocolate chip cookie and poured yourself what you thought was a cold, refreshing glass of milk? You dip the cookie in the milk, take a bite, and you want to throw up. Curdled, rancid, sour milk! You look at the expiration date on the milk and it went bad 2 weeks ago. GROSS! Nothing is nastier than sour milk past the expiration date. Are you keeping anger past the expiration date? If kept around, this leftover will sour and spill over into every relationship, causing broken relationships, damaged lives, shattered dreams. THE BIG IDEA: Anger is to be managed, it must be mastered.

Why Are You So Mad?

Statistics show that more than 60% of people lose their temper at least once per week. This stat should get you angry because you know the other 40% of respondents are not being honest! Everyone has buttons that if pushed correctly amp up our emotions. These triggers have the ability to set one off on a path of destructive words, thoughts and behaviors. THE BIG IDEA: If you don’t define your anger, your anger will define you.
