Envy & Comparison

Killing What’s Killing You, Part 1

September 4, 2022 • Dr. Carlo Serrano • John 20:1–10, John 21:1–22

Like spider webs, we often don’t see life’s biggest problems coming until we’re tangled up in them. We want to avoid the webs, but what we really need is to kill the spider—or get to the roots and true causes of our issues. Envy is a feeling of discontent or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck. Our sinful nature urges us to compare ourselves to others, taking our eyes off of who God made us to be and what he wants us to do—but we have no obligation to keep dealing with these “webs.”
The Big Idea: Comparison tries to kill what God wants to heal.

Guilt & Shame

Jesus wants to free us from being pinned down by shame. When healthy conviction comes, we can either cover up or come clean. Covering up leads to unhealthy shame, but Jesus went to the cross to destroy our shame. When we come clean, sin no longer defines us. THE BIG IDEA: Guilt is feeling bad about what you’ve done. Shame is feeling bad about who you are.

Bitterness & Anger

September 18, 2022 • Dave Thompson • Romans 8:13, Hebrews 12:15, Matthew 16:21–25

All of us have the capacity to get angry. The bible doesn’t prohibit anger—it’s a very real emotion! But we have to learn to express anger in a healthy way, or it will lead to bitterness. And there’s no healthy expression for bitterness. It’s just toxic. THE BIG IDEA: Bitterness is the result of unresolved, unforgiven anger and resentment built up over time.

Worry & Fear

September 11, 2022 • Dr. Carlo Serrano • Judges 6:1–23

As followers of Jesus, we are under no obligation to get caught in the webs that bring spiritual and emotional death. Instead, we can kill what is killing us through the power of the Spirit. This week, Carlo talked about the web of worry. If worry is the web, the thing that spins that web most often is fear. The Big Idea: Freedom from fear comes from faith in the Father.
