Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today, Susan Hales shares her thoughts about being thankful for having a friend like Jesus.
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30 NIV).
On Thanksgiving, a common question is, "What are you thankful for?" My answer is “friends.” I never knew how important friends were until I faced a cancer diagnosis alone.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had no real friends because I was selfish, self-centered, and self-absorbed. Thank God for His grace and mercy. I am not that person anymore. I am thankful to have many friends who support and strengthen me.
I love the story in the Bible about how Aaron, Moses, and Hur stood on a hill overlooking the battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites. When Moses held up the staff of God, the Israelites prevailed.
However, Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold up the staff. His friends Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands.
Thanks to the support of Moses' friends, the Israelites won the battle (Exodus 17:12-13).
Jesus is our best friend because He laid down His life for our sake. We experience pain and suffering, but we can talk to Jesus any time of the day or night and ask for His strength whenever we need it.
I remember the hymn I learned as a child: What a Friend We Have in Jesus. It begins, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.”
What a privilege to have friends, especially a friend like Jesus. Are you thankful for friends? Today, share with your friends how grateful you are for their love and support.
