Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Jessica Gerth.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14 NIV).

Memories of childhood Christmases flood my mind as we approach this season each year. Family traditions, dragging countless boxes of decorations down from the attic, and the children’s nativity play at church - complete with wisemen, sheep, and angels. The final touch was a plastic doll named “Jesus” wrapped in a blanket.

Rejection. Mockery. Pain. No one asks for these things; most of us would avoid them if we could. If someone came to me and predicted in detail every physical and emotional battle I would face, I’m honestly not sure that I would be strong enough to willingly step into that life.

But God so loved the world…

Isaiah prophesied Jesus’ coming hundreds of years before His birth in that little town of Bethlehem (Isaiah Chapter 53). Predicted was Christ’s suffering, affliction, and being wounded for our transgressions. Still, He came.

“The Word became flesh”. The significance of those four words from today’s focus scripture is soul-changing. My God chose to take on human form, humbling Himself and fully experiencing every physical and emotional feeling we do - hunger, thirst, sadness, joy, and finally death.

The Message translation of this scripture reads, “The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood”. Jesus didn’t have royal beginnings as one might expect. God often does the unexpected, and our Savior arrived in the form of a tiny, helpless infant.

As we prepare our homes this Christmas and dress our children as shepherds and livestock for the children’s nativity play, let our hearts remember the gift we should celebrate all year.

Jesus chose to dwell with us. He moved into our neighborhood. Thank God for revealing His incredible glory to us in a way we can grasp. Grace and truth were born in a manger and called “Emmanuel”.
