December 9, 2024 • Sharee Gaiser • Mark 12:30, Hosea 1:6

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Sharee Gaiser shares her thoughts about returning to the Lord in this season of celebration.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30 NIV).

“Come, let us return to the LORD” (Hosea 1:6a NIV).

In the past month, I have let myself go. Now, before you imagine me sitting on my couch with a tub of ice cream, watching a screen of streamed entertainment, I've let myself go spiritually. It didn't happen overnight, but it did happen. I might have missed it if it hadn't been for the uneasy, lonely feeling deep in my soul.

Things started to slide when a friend went silent, a family member received a diagnosis, and health challenges caused distraction. I offered my “yes” to more than my soul could handle to avoid losing control. There was no time left for God; all He got was a cold shoulder instead of my time.

Have you ever wandered spiritually? Like a boat detached from its mooring, you feel lost at sea without a paddle. Before Jesus came, we were like this, too—wandering, lost, and needing a Savior.

In Hosea, we read a heartfelt call to return to the Lord: "Come, let us return to the LORD."

Jesus came into the world, lay in a manger, and showed us the way back to God because He is the only Way.

Repentance means turning away—not turning away from God but resisting what pulls us far from Him. We are not to close our eyes to sin but make a complete turn and walk in the opposite direction. We were on a path leading nowhere; now, we can be on a path leading to abundant life!

Christmas is more than a tradition. Christmas requires a response. The word response means to react to something. It is active, not passive. God desires our "yes." In this busy time of the year, take five minutes to pause, pray, and praise Him for His forgiveness and grace. Open your hands and release any striving or stress you are feeling. Breathe deeply of the peace of God and give Him thanks. Come, dear friends, and return to the Lord, the Savior and lover of your soul.
