Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotional is written by Marge Webb.
Our scripture reference for today is from Psalm 103: 1-2 MSG. “O my soul, bless God. From head to toe, I’ll bless His holy name! O my soul, bless God, don’t forget a single blessing!”
Thanksgiving is such a joyous time, isn’t it? I love cooking and have a foolproof way of making a succulent turkey that does not dry out. My friend Sarah bakes the best yeast rolls ever, my daughter-in-law brings yummy yams with marshmallows and pecans, and my daughter makes the best homemade mashed potatoes.
The smallest two granddaughters love mashed potatoes as though they were made of gold, and the oldest two won’t touch them. “Gammo, it’s a texture thing,” Lyric says. So much fun!
The Psalm writer extraordinaire, King David, was joyous when he wrote Psalm 103. It is filled with phrases that praise his God.
“My youth is renewed like the eagles.”
“The Lord is passionate and gracious.”
“The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in love.”
His heart was full of praises to our God. Was it because David never had any sorrow or troubles? Of course not. He could write a book; he did write a portion of the Bible. Many of the Psalms bear his name as the author.
David’s family was what we call dysfunctional. Like we all do, they had hidden secrets revealed in the scriptures. King David dealt with incest, lust, an affair, murder, the death of a precious baby, and other family struggles. But David turned his sorrow into praise in the many psalms that he wrote.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, enjoy your festivities and time with family. But don’t forget that this day is about a time to give thanks. Let’s praise the God who David praised in Psalm 103 verses 3-5 when he said, “Praise the Lord, my soul, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live.” (NRSV)
