Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Sharon Gomez (Writer) - Sharee Gaiser (Narrator)

December 5, 2024 • Sharon Gomez • Luke 2:7

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Sharon Gomez encourages us to reflect on Jesus’s humble birth.

“She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them” (Luke 2:7 NLT).

My son’s birthday is on December 21st. For those with December birthdays, you know the feeling of your special day being overshadowed by the busy Christmas season. When my son was growing up, I made every effort to ensure his birthday focused on him.  His party themes were not extravagant, but his birthday gifts were never wrapped in Christmas paper!

Today’s verse is a record of Jesus’ birth. Depending on which version of Luke 2:7 you read, few sentences describe our Savior and His humble entry, but they paint quite a picture.

There was a faithful young couple, an outdoor birth, strips of cloth for a baby blanket, and a feeding trough for a bassinet. When we read on, we learn that the heavens greeted Him with song. His first visitors were shepherds invited by angels.

Scripture doesn’t specifically tell us how Jesus celebrated His birthdays, but we know He happily participated in weddings and Jewish festivals. How wonderful to know that God Himself enjoyed food, laughter, and fellowship!

Just like we recognize the guest of honor during our modern-day birthday celebrations with food, gifts, and shared stories, believers of Christ strive daily to celebrate Jesus the same way.

We thank Him for our daily meals, give Him gifts by praying and spending personal time in His word, and share stories through our testimonies of how Jesus never leaves our side.

This time of year, reminders of the Christmas story are all around us. Take time to celebrate Jesus by reflecting on God’s choice of Joseph and Mary and Jesus’ humble entry into our world.
