Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Karen Wardle shares her thoughts about having a mind anchored in thankfulness.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30 NIV).

“Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving” (Ephesians 5:4, ESV).

Have you ever struggled with thankfulness?

In a world filled with distractions and negativity, anchoring our minds in thankfulness keeps our hearts aligned with God. Paul reminds us that instead of indulging in harmful speech, we are to focus on gratitude. Our words and thoughts reflect the condition of our hearts, and a heart brimming with thankfulness will naturally overflow with praise, encouragement, and love.

Jesus offers us the key to doing this in Mark 12:30 (ESV): “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." When we love God fully, our minds are transformed; they are no longer controlled by fleeting desires or the weight of our circumstances. Instead, our thoughts become a constant expression of gratitude for who He is and what He has done.

Thankfulness is not just about acknowledging God’s blessings; it is about recognizing His presence in every aspect of our lives. Even in challenges, we can be thankful because God is with us, guiding, shaping, and never abandoning us. When our minds are anchored in this truth, we guard ourselves against the worldly distractions that seek to pull us away from His goodness.

A thankful heart fuels a life of worship. It shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance of God’s love. It silences complaints and negative speech and replaces them with declarations of His faithfulness. By loving God with all our minds, we create a foundation where thanksgiving becomes a natural response, regardless of our circumstances.

Today, choose to anchor your thoughts in thankfulness. Let the words you speak and the thoughts you entertain reflect the love you have for the Lord. As you do, you will find that your mind is more at peace, your heart more joyful, and your soul more anchored in His presence.
