In this season of thanksgiving, Sharon Gomez reflects on Paul’s call to righteousness.


“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things” (Philippians 4:8 NIV).

 

As I grow older, I become more and more aware of how quickly time flies. The holidays are upon us, and I find myself again in this beautiful season of gratitude. 

 

Along with the beauty of the season also comes the busyness. Most of us add more obligations to our already packed schedules. There is the planning, the traveling, the shopping, the cooking, and sometimes even the “drama” that comes from the dynamics of family and friend relationships.

 

I like to turn to Paul's teachings this time of year to fix my thoughts on righteousness and not allow the season's busyness to overpower me.  In today’s verse, Paul stresses the importance of fixing our thoughts on the right things.

 

Whatever is true: Think about God’s word as Truth (Psalm 119:160).

 

Whatever is noble: Give your attention to those who live out holiness and watch how God takes delight in them (Psalm 16:3).

 

Whatever is right: Consider and seek His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

 

Whatever is pure: Guard your heart and your thoughts (Psalm 73:1).

 

Whatever is lovely: Consider what is lovely and pleasing to God (Ephesians 5:10)

 

Whatever is admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy: Offer praise to whom and what you admire; above all, God desires our praise (Psalm 150).

 

As we begin this time of thankfulness and the coming celebration of the birth of Christ, let’s reflect on today’s verse and turn our thoughts and hearts to what pleases God, meditating on gratitude for all Christ has done for us so we can persevere through the circumstances that come our way in this season.
