Staying Right with God

Christ is our key to overcoming sin, especially idolatry—any noun, person, place, thing, or thought we look to as our source. Any source other than Christ is a false god who tries to be a substitute for our Savior, His truth, and His principles. We must reject anything that conflicts with the person of Christ. He should be our focus, knowing that intimacy with Him is the basis of our victory over sin.

Anyone traveling by train, bus, or plane must trust the conductor, driver, or pilot to know what they are doing. To go from the place of departure to the point of arrival, travelers must rest knowing that someone else can navigate with assurance and guide them to their destination. The same is true of how Christians must rest in God as the conductor, driver, and pilot of their lives.

God intends for Christians to view ourselves as victors and not victims as we overcome the attempts of this world to defeat us. In Greek, the word for “overcome” is Nike, which means to prevail or to be victorious. We have been given the position of victory because of our relationship with Christ. The position, however, is not all we need. We have the responsibility to live out what has been given to us. If we fulfill our responsibility, we can be assured we will prevail.

God makes it clear that fellowship is a family affair. Think about love within a nuclear family. Parents desire their children to love their siblings just as they love their kids and each other. Similarly, how we operate within the family of God matters to the head of the family, the Father. When we fail to love our brothers and sisters in Christ we disobey His commandment. If we indulge in hate, we will not experience the presence of God in our lives. God desires to work for us, in us, and through us, but we must learn to live in His light, and a great way to start is to obey His command to love.

We are all guilty of sin and fall short of God’s Holy standard. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, our representative and advocate with the Father. He intercedes for us when we acknowledge and confess sin as wrong to God, the Judge of righteousness. Jesus is the Son of the Judge and also the satisfaction for sin. His perfect righteousness is transferred to us so that we stand corrected and pure before a Holy God. Because of Jesus, the Father does not have to judge us any further, and we can remain in fellowship with Him. We should praise God daily as an expression of gratitude for the advocacy that we have in Jesus Christ.

Fellowship with God’s precepts implies a shared experience with His guidelines found in His Word. As we learn from Scripture how to deepen our relationship with Him, we experience joy. Joy is a settled quality on the inside that transcends circumstances on the outside. God’s reality gives us inner calm despite the storms of life. If we desire joy, then we must pursue a higher level of intimacy with God.
