1. By GRACE we become the children of God.

· Christians have the privilege of being called the “children of God.”

· John reminds us of the privilege that we have in being called the children of God

o It is a title (or a name) and it reminds us to whom we belong.

o It is customary in many Christian homes for children to be given biblical names.

o Those names carry meaning and set a standard for how lives are to be lived.

1. The 2 greatest commandments and the love of family are one in the same. · As we deal with this first verse let’s remember that John walked with Jesus and lived His ministry with Him. He would have remembered the conversation that took place between Jesus and a teacher of the law where Jesus was asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” Mark 12:29-31 “"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these."
