The Gospel of Matthew deeply challenged the Jewish Christians in Syro-Palestine who first received The Gospel of Matthew. Obeying the commands to be SALT and LIGHT could be very costly. And yet, these are Jesus’s words. If you follow Jesus, are you challenged by Jesus’s words. What will you do? Assimilate, isolate, or be salt and light?

In the story of the good Samaritan, Jesus answers two questions: 1. Who’s my neighbor? 2. What does it mean to love my neighbor? As we’ll see, our neighbors include those with whom we share ANIMOSITY, HOSTILITY, & DISTRUST. And loving our neighbor means demonstrating MERCY (compassion, contact, and care) to those neighbors!
