It is typical to want more than we currently have. Culturally speaking most of us have been conditioned to value and expect that things will always be up and to the right. But as the years pass by, we experience the ups and downs, and twists and turns of life. While this sharp break from our expectations can cause a bitterness in many, God wants us to find contentment. While life can be hard, all of us can choose to grow right where God has planted us.

Can you remember making someone a gift when you were young? Or perhaps one of your children made you a gift at one point. I can remember, even as a child, having no money and feeling the guilt for not being able to do more for my family members. But those gifts are quite often things we treasure the most. People giving us what they can, from their own hands. Even when the gift may not seem big, it is always the heart of the giver that matters most!

Like Dave Ramsey says, "If you will live like no one else, later you can live and give like no one else.” But this is not always how things work. But imagine if the most influential person in human history started their life in extreme difficulty. The one who deserved the most, showing up with the least. While we can all want the fancy things in life at times, so often the best outcomes begin with humility!

I still remember, as a young child, feeling a special magic around Christmas time. And then one year it felt different. Another year I was sick and couldn’t enjoy anything. Then there was the year that grandma died, and tears marked that season. When you think about this time of year, what happened during the worst Christas you have experienced? It is said that the furthest distance is the 12 to 14 inches between the head and the heart. So many of us think things, and even believe them, but they have not yet gotten into our hearts, been pumped around our bodies, and made their way to our hands and our feet. As we get ready to enter a brand new year, perhaps a spiritual EKG is in order for each of us. Everything in life is a heart issue - so let’s see if God will grow ours from where it is, to three sizes bigger!
