January 28, 2024 • Pastor Bob Becker • Isaiah 24—27, Isaiah 26:9, Psalm 16, Philippians 3:7–14

Topic: "God Controls History"

Sermon Summary:

Augustine, after hearing the Romans were defeated by the Goths in 410 AD, compared the world to an old man. Old age has a way of causing us much discomfort—coughing, shaking, failing eyesight, anxiety, and great fatigue. When a man grows old, he is full of complaints. Likewise, as the world grows older it is filled with more and more tribulations. Augustine tells us not to hang on to the old man, the world, but to regain our youth in Christ. Christ says to all of us, “The world is passing away. It is losing its grip and is short of breath. Do not fear, your youth shall be renewed as an eagle.” God is in control of not just world history, but also our personal history. There is nothing to fear. There is, as Augustine put it, only two cities—the city of man and the city of God—and only the latter endures forever.
