How important is having the Word of the Lord in our lives? Without the Word of the Lord individuals, churches, and nations cast off restraint. We act like the people in the book of Judges where everyone did what was right in their own eyes. Without the Word of the Lord, we have no vision for the future, no purpose for why we are here. This is true for individuals, churches, and societies. All church vision and mission must be based on the Word of God. Yet if God’s people have no hunger for learning the Word of the Lord, will they have a hunger to fulfill their church’s vision?

Most of the 7 sins of folly I have already mentioned in previous sermons—envy, greed, lust, pride, wrath (anger). The sins I did speak on and are rarely preached on are the sins of gluttony and laziness. These sins are easily overlooked since few see themselves as gluttonous or lazy. The problem is in how we define these sins since gluttony can be more than consuming too much food and drink and laziness can be seen not in how we perform our duties at work but in seeking the things of God. Paul tells us to make no provision for the flesh in gratifying its desires but to put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.

“Money, Money, Money!”

October 3, 2021 • Pastor Bob Becker • Proverbs 10:22

Money, money, money! Some believe money is what makes the world go around. The Bible says the Lord is the giver of wealth. Wisdom is needed to know how to use it in a way that brings Him honor. Jesus says we should give much of our wealth to the poor. For those that are ruled by their wealth, He asked them to give it all away. Most Christians believe they do not have a problem worshipping money. How often do we wish we were rich? How often do we speak about needing money? How little do we give away? Jesus cares for us and He does make some of us wealthy in the world’s eyes. However, the only way to be wealthy in His eyes is to put honoring Him first and seeing wealth as a tool to help others. The wealth He gives us is to be used to promote the gospel in word and deed. Then through our wealth, He is glorified!

All over the Bible God calls His people to be humble. Pride by its very nature is an affront to God. Proverbs calls us to learn wisdom and discernment and that is impossible without learning humility. Pride led Satan and man to rebel against God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. A hardened heart according to Proverbs brings calamity and produces fear. A humble ear listens and revers the Word of God listens to rebuke and confesses and repents of sin. The great example of humility was Jesus Christ. If we imitate Him, we cannot help but be humble.
