Does sin impede our relationship to God? Are material things important to God? If we are spiritually enlightened, can we ignore such mundane things as sin and morality? John says those who think sin is irrelevant are being deceptive. Their belief is not due to ignorance but is a cover up of the truth. Only those who are alienated from God are also alienated from the truth. Sin even if we deny it still exists in our lives and therefore our heartfelt response as Christians must be confession knowing we stand forgiven through the blood of the cross.

Two choices stand before everyone including those in the church. We either love God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—or we love the world. It is so easy in the church to look spiritual, to act spiritual, while our hearts are possessed by the world. Though God so loved the world that he sent his Son to redeem the world most in the world have rejected him and indeed remain infatuated with the world. Christians must be careful not to also become infatuated with the world. It is so easy to be caught up with the desires of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boasting of one’s lifestyle, i.e., the pride of life. In short, it is easy to be seduced by the world. Choosing the world will destroy a relationship with the Father for things of this world that are prepared to vanish.

John just got done calling out the beliefs of false teachers and false Christians. Now he calls those who believe rightly to live rightly. John teaches us what true spiritual maturity looks like. If you say you know Jesus, you must keep his commandments. If you say you abide in Him, you must walk as he walked. If you say you walk in the light you must love your brother. To fail to live this way is to be disconnected from God. It shows a lack of devotion to God, a lack of spiritual vigor to live like Jesus.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
