The Life of David

Living in Exile

May 19, 2024 • David Horner • 1 Samuel 19, Psalm 59

In 1 Samuel 19, Saul's murderous intentions against David are no longer a secret and David is forced to flee. From this time on, he will live as an exile until he comes to the throne. Peter described the Christian life as the life of an exile. Since our citizenship is in heaven, all those in Christ live as exiles on this earth. This week Pastor David preaches a message about "Living in Exile" from 1 Samuel 19.

Do You Love Him or Hate Him?

May 5, 2024 • David Horner • Luke 12, 1 Samuel 18

In the aftermath of David's battle with Goliath, his name was on the rise. But his greatness brought polarizing responses. Jonathan, Michal, and most all of Israel loved him, but Saul was being consumed with jealousy. The varying responses to David's rise depict the varying responses people have to God's Messiah, Jesus Christ. Pastor David preaches from 1 Samuel 18 in a message titled, "Do you love him or hate him?"

Facing the Giants of Life

April 28, 2024 • Doug Horner • 1 Samuel 17

David vs. Goliath. The runt of his family vs. the giant of the Philistines. David did the unthinkable and defeated Goliath because he trusted in a God who was bigger than Goliath. David's great faith is seen in his battle with Goliath and challenges us to put our faith in the God who is bigger than anything we face.

The Chosen One

April 21, 2024 • David Horner • 1 Samuel 16

God's chosen King was "a man after his own heart". In 1 Samuel 16, God takes David from the sheep pastures and anoints him as King over Israel because he was this man. Ultimately, David's anointing as King points us to Jesus Christ, the "Messiah" or "Anointed One".

Chase After the Heart of God

April 14, 2024 • Doug Horner • 1 Samuel 13—15

Saul was the first King of Israel and started off well. But it soon became apparent that he cared more about his own glory than God's glory. Some foolish and disobedient decisions by Saul led God to reject him as King and set the stage for a new King to arise.

We Want A King!

April 7, 2024 • David Horner • 1 Samuel 8

At the end of the period of the Judges, Israel demanded that the prophet Samuel appoint for them a king so that they could be like all the other nations and have someone to fight their battles. Their motivation for a king revealed that they had rejected their true King – God – who had called them to holiness and who had never lost a battle. Today, we often look to a host of things and people to appoint "King" in our life – someone or something that can bring us peace, security, and happiness. These "Kings" end up taking from us until we become enslaved to them. But God is the King who gives – and this is seen most clearly in the God-man, Jesus Christ who gave his life as a ransom for many on the cross. Is God YOUR King?
