When Elijah came out of obscurity to confront Ahab, Ahab blamed the nation's troubles on him. But Elijah made it clear that it was the ungodliness of Ahab that had left the nation literally high and dry. Elder Jeff Horner teaches at our men's event on 1 Kings 18:1-19.

Elijah Vs. The Prophets of Baal

It seemed like 1 vs. 850. Elijah vs. the Prophets of Baal and Ashtoreth. But really it was 1 vs. 0. The true God of Israel vs. a god who doesn't exist. Still, Elijah put everything on the line in obedience to God to show the people that YHWH was the true God. In the face of such great evidence, they had to make a decision, just as we do today.

A Godly Man in an Ungodly Culture

The nation of Israel was in trouble. It had been divided into north and south, and a long succession of evil kings had deteriorated the moral fabric of the culture. No king was more evil than Ahab who was heavily influenced by his wife Jezebel. Together, they made Baal worship the state-sponsored religion. But in the midst of this ungodly culture, God raised up a bold prophet: Elijah. Our culture is not much different from Elijah's. What did it look like for a godly man like Elijah to stand up in the midst of an ungodly culture? We can learn from Elijah what it looks like to be a man of God today.
